  • Bourton-on-the-Water is a picturesque Cotswold village, the boundaries of which are defined largely by a series of streams. The village is best known for the shallow river Windrush, which flows through the High Street. George Moore was a local benefactor of the village, funding Victoria Hall, the original cottage hospital, and the cricket field. He died in 1927.

  • This commission was the last of four new community hospitals for NHS Gloucestershire. The commission comprised a waymarking colour scheme for the internal walls, and seven decorative glass panels for the main Waiting Room.

The intention for the internal colours was to create a visual delineation for the building, by defining the common, publicly-accessible areas, and highlighting certain critical positions. This has been achieved by using three contrasting, but complementary, RAL colours.

  • For the glasswork, the Art Committee requested that the design reflect the aqueous character of the Bourton environment, and that it create an attractive and relaxed environment for the Waiting Room. The reed and wildfowl design has been printed onto two sides of the glass to give an element of depth. The striking dichroic duck motifs change colour, depending on the angle of view.

The completed work is effective from both inside and outside the building and, by creating degrees of patient privacy, creates a calm, quiet environment for patients to enjoy.
