  • The commission was to design and make two circular windows for a building of offices and light-industrial units. One window was for the Conference Room and the other for a nearby stairwell.

  • The designs were based on collages inspired by innovative mechanical inventions of the century. They are intended to be forward-looking and progressive, to reflect the building’s new lease of life. I wanted to imitate the creativity of the inventive process, and represent on paper (through the use of collage) the necessary imaginative thought-processes. In this way, the windows can be considered to be a visual representation of innovative thought. Included within the designs are references to the building’s previous use as a button factory.

The windows are bold and colourful and are intended to animate the space and enliven dreary conferences. The commission was one element of the Batley Public Arts programme, which in 1996 won the British Gas Properties / Arts Council “Working for Cities’ award for ‘Arts in Urban Renewal’.
